Dom stones

Serving Stones for Sweets / Karel V

These DOM stone objects were specially designed for the KAREL V restaurant in the Grand Hotel Karel V in Utrecht.

They come from the upper part of the restored DOM Tower. Ruizeveld crafted 15 objects from these limestone and slate stones in eight variations, for 2, 3, or 4 people. A Michelin*-worthy presentation for the special friandises of Restaurant Karel V.

Stones from the Dom Tower and surroundings...

The renovation of the Dom Tower in Utrecht was a large-scale project that was completed in November 2024, after approximately five years of work. The restoration was necessary due to the effects of the weather—wind, rain, sun, and freezing temperatures—which damaged the natural stone and wrought ironwork. The work, which included the exterior of the tower, focused on replacing and restoring approximately 10.000 stones, regilding the clock faces, and repairing the weather vane and carillon.

The municipality of Utrecht invited artists to create something circular from these. Ruizeveld submitted a project to create solitary bee and insect habitats. They are for sale on this site and at Winkel van Utrecht, Domplein 9 in Utrecht.

Ruizeveld had already started building solitary bee and insect enclosures using hardstone curbs from Utrecht's streets. The hardstone is often worn, too smooth, and too heavy to work with, so they are all being replaced with concrete curbs.

However, they are old and solid, and full of beautiful fossils. So good enough for a second life.

The small granite objects are second-hand stones left over from the construction of the Stadhuisplein in Nieuwegein.
